  We are all climbing toward the summit of our hearts’ desire. Should the other climber steal your sack and your purse and wax fat on the one and heavy on the other, you should pity him;

The climbing will be harder for his flesh, and the burden will make his way longer.

And should you in your leanness see his flesh puffing upward, help him a step; it will add to your swiftness.

  我們都在攀登理想的頂峰。如果別的攀登者偷了你的背包、錢(qián)袋,裝滿他自己的背包,加重他自己的錢(qián)袋,你應(yīng)該可憐他;

you were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.

you shall be together when white wings of death scatter your days.

aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of god.

but let there be spaces in your togetherness,

and let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

love one another but make not a bond of love:

let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

  "Pain"

Then a woman said, "Please talk to us about pain."

  He said:

Your pain is the shattering of the shell that encloses knowledge.

Even the fruit core must be broken so that the nut can be exposed to the sunlight, so you must also know pain.

  If you can make your heart often admire the wonder of daily life, the wonder of your pain will not be less than your joy;

You have to bear the seasons of your heart, just as you often bear the four seasons spent in the fields.

You have to stay quiet and get through the desolate winter in your heart.

Much of the pain is chosen by you.

It is the physician within you, the bitter medicine that heals your sick body.

So you have to trust this doctor and take his medicine in silence and peace:

Because although his methods are heavy and harsh, they are guided by the unseen gentle hand.

The medicine cup he brings, although it will burn your lips, the clay is moistened and tempered by the potter with his own sacred tears.

  Prophet

There was a woman named Almitra who came out of the temple. She was a prophetess.

Almustafa looked at her with infinite kindness, for she was one of those who first sought him and believed in him when he entered the city on the first day.

  She congratulated him, saying:

Prophet of God, supreme seeker, you have often looked afar for your sails.

Now your ship has come and you must return.

Your longing for the hometown of memories and the abode of your greater desires is so profound; our love cannot bind you, nor can our needs detain you.

But before you part, we ask you to speak the truth to us.

We will pass this truth on to our children, and they will pass it on to theirs, in an unbroken line.

In your solitude, you have guarded our days, and in your wakefulness, you have listened to our cries and laughter in our sleep.

Now disclose to us our "true self" and tell us all you know about the middle ground between life and death.

  He replied:

O people of Arfalis, what can I say except what is now stirring in your souls?

  "Conversation"

Then a scholar said, Please talk about conversation.

  He replied:

When you are uneasy with your thoughts, you speak.

When you can no longer live in the solitude of your heart, you will live on your lips, and the sound is a pastime, an entertainment.

In many of your conversations, thoughts are half-maimed.

Thoughts are like birds in the sky. In the cage of language, they may spread their wings but will not fly.

Among you, many people, because they are afraid of silence, go to those who talk a lot.

In the silence of solitude, they will present themselves as having nothing in their eyes, and they want to escape.

There are also some speakers who have no knowledge and consideration but want to reveal a truth that they themselves do not understand.

There are also some people whose hearts hide the truth, but they do not speak it with words.

In the hearts of these people, the soul dwells in the rhythmic silence.

When you meet your friend by the road or in the market, let your heart, use your lips, and guide your tongue.

Let the voice within your voice speak to the ear within his ear:

Because his soul is to hold the truth in your heart.

Just as the light of wine is forgotten, the wine cup does not remain, but the taste of wine is always remembered.

  "Prayer"

Then a nun said, "Please talk to us about prayer."

  He replied:

You always pray when you are in grief or in need. I wish you would also pray in perfect joy and rich days.

For isnt prayer the unfolding of your own self in the living ether?

If pouring out the darkness in your heart to the universe is a comfort, then pouring out the dawn light in your heart is also a joy.

If when your soul commands you to pray, you only weep, she will repeatedly encourage you from your weeping until you smile with joy.

When you pray, you rise above the mundane and in the air you meet those who pray at the same hour as you, those whom you would not meet except during the hour of prayer.

Then, let the worship of your unseen temple be only a joyous and sweet gathering.

For if you enter the temple with no other purpose than to make requests, you will not be accepted.

If you enter the temple only to humble yourself, you will not be elevated.

Even if you enter the temple only to seek blessings for others, you will not be approved.

As long as you enter that unseen temple, that is enough.

I cannot teach you how to pray with words.

God will not listen to your words except for those words of its own that it utters through your lips.

And I cannot impart to you the prayers of the sea, the forest and the mountains.

But you who grow among the mountains, the forest and the sea can understand their prayers in your hearts.

If you listen in the solemn silence of the night, you will hear them say in solemn stillness:

"Our own Higher Self, God, Your will is our will.

  Your desire is our desire.

Your divine power turns the night You have given us into day.

We cannot ask You for anything, for You know our needs before we even have the thought.

What we give You is our need.

When You give Yourself more to us, You give us everything."

  "Friendship"

Then a youth said, "Speak to us of Friendship."

  He replied:

Your friend is your need answered.

He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.

He is your board and your fireside.

For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.

When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the "nay" in your own mind, nor do you withhold the "ay".

  When he is silent your heart still listens to his heart;

For in friendship all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared without words in a joy that is unclaimed.

  When you part from your friend, do not be sad;

For what you most love in him may be clearer when he is gone, as the mountain peaks become more distinct from the plain when the climber is away.

Let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.

For that love which seeks only to reveal its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth: it catches only what is unprofitable.

Give your best to your friend.

If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also.

Is the one who seeks you only to pass the time, still your friend?

Seek him in the hours of growth.

For his hours are enough for your need but not for your emptiness.

In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter and sharing of pleasures.

For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

  "Professor"

Then a teacher said, Please tell us about professors.

  He said:

No one can reveal anything to you except what is already half-asleep and lying in the dawn light of your knowledge.

The teacher who walks among the disciples in the shade of the temple is not imparting his wisdom but his faithfulness and kindness.

If he is truly wise, he will not command you to enter the hall of his wisdom but will guide you to the door of your own heart.

An astronomer can tell you about his understanding of space, but he cannot give you his understanding.

A musician can sing for you the rhythms that fill space, but he cannot give you the ears that receive the rhythms and the voice that responds to them.

A person proficient in mathematics can state the directions of weights and measures, but he cannot guide you to that direction.

Because one cannot lend his ideal wings to others.

Just as Gods understanding of each of you is different, so your views of God and the earth should also be different.

"Your Children Are Not Actually Yours"

Your children are not actually yours. They are children born of lifes longing for itself.

They come into this world through you, but not because of you. They are by your side, but do not belong to you.

What you can give them is your love, but not your thoughts, because they have their own minds.

What you can shelter is their bodies, but not their souls, because their souls belong to tomorrow, to a tomorrow that you can never reach even in your dreams.

You can do your best to become like them, but do not make them become like you, because life does not go backward nor stay in the past.

You are the bow, and your children are the arrows shot from you.

The archer looks at the target on the road ahead. He uses all his strength to draw you apart to make his arrows fly fast and far.

Bend with a happy heart in the hands of the archer, because he loves the arrows that fly all the way, and also loves the extremely stable bow.

  "Freedom"

Then a rhetorician said, "Speak to us of Freedom."

  He answered:

At the city gate and by your fireside I have seen you prostrate yourselves and worship your own Freedom, even as slaves humble themselves before a tyrant and praise him before he slays them.

Alas, in the groves of the temple and in the shadows of the citadel I have seen the freest among you wear their freedom as a yoke and a handcuff.

I grieve that the very desire for Freedom has become a bond, and that you no longer hold Freedom as a banner: you are free only when you achieve.

You are free when your days are not without care nor your nights without a desire and a sorrow.

Rather you are free when you are liberated naked and unencumbered, even above those things that besiege your life.

But how shall you rise beyond your days and nights unless you break the chains which bind your noon to your night?

In truth that which you call Freedom is the strongest of these chains, though its links glitter in the sun and dazzle your eyes.

Is not Freedom a fragment of yourselves?

Would you give up the fragment to be free?

If it is an unjust law you would abolish, that law was written with your own hand upon your own forehead.

You cannot erase it by burning your law books nor by washing the foreheads of your judges with all the waters of the ocean.

If it is a tyrant you would dethrone, see first that his throne erected within you is destroyed.

For how can a tyrant rule the free and the proud?

Unless it be that the tyranny within you begets the tyrant without.

If it is a care you would cast off, that care has been chosen by you rather than imposed upon you.

If it is a terror you would dispel, the seat of that terror is in your heart and not in the hand of the terrorized.

Verily, all things move within you, desires and fears, hates and loves, pursuits and retreats, are everlastingly interlocked.

These things move within you as lights and shadows in pairs that cling.

And when the shadow fades and is no more, the light that lingers becomes a shadow to another light.

So when your freedom is taken from its fetters, it itself becomes the fetter of a greater freedom.
