Not long after an old Chinese woman came back to China from her visit to her daughter in the States, she went to a city bank to deposit the US dollars her daughter gave her. At the bank counter, the clerk checked each note carefully to see if the money was real. It made the old lady out of patience.
At last she could not hold any more, uttering. "Trust me, Sir, and trust the money. They are real US dollars. They are directly from America."

一位中國(guó)老婦人在美國(guó)看望女兒回來(lái)不久，到一家市銀行存女兒送給她的美元。在銀行柜臺(tái)，銀行職員認(rèn)真檢查了每一張鈔票，看是否有假。

She kindled a third match. Again shot up the flame; and now she was sitting under a most beautiful Christmas tree ,far larger, and far more prettily decked out, than the one she had seen last Christmas eve through the glass doors of the rich merchant's house. Hundreds of wax-tapers lighted up the green branches, and tiny painted figures, such as she had seen in the shop-windows, looked down from the tree upon her. The child stretched out her hands towards them in delight, and in that moment the lights of the match warm quenched; still, however, the Christmas candles burned higher and higher， she beheld them beaming like stars in heaven; one of them fell, the lights streaming behind it like a long, fiery tail.
“Now some one is dying,” said the little girl, softly, for she had been told by her old grandmother， the only person who had ever been kind to her, and who was now dead that whenever a star falls an immortal spirit returns to the God who gave it.
She struck yet another match against the wall; it flamed up, and surrounded by its light, appeared before her that same dear grandmother, gentle and loving as always, but bright and happy as she had never looked during her lifetime.
她擦著了第三根火柴，又冒出了火焰�，F(xiàn)在她覺(jué)得正坐在非常美麗的圣誕樹下面，比上次圣誕節(jié)透過(guò)那富商家的玻璃門看到的那株還要大、還要美。這株樹的綠枝上點(diǎn)燃著許許多多的蠟燭，顏色瑰麗的圖畫，就象櫥窗里掛著的那些一樣漂亮，仿佛在向她眨眼。小姑娘把兩只手伸過(guò)去，火柴又熄滅了。然而圣誕樹上的燭光越升越高。她看到它們變成了明亮的星星，有一顆落下來(lái)，在天上劃出一道長(zhǎng)長(zhǎng)的火絲。
“現(xiàn)在又有一個(gè)什么人死了�！毙」媚镎f(shuō)。因?yàn)樗睦献婺浮粋�(gè)唯一待她好的人，現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)死了，曾經(jīng)告訴過(guò)她，天上落下一顆星，地上就有一個(gè)靈魂回到曾賦于他生命的上帝那里去。
她在墻上又擦了一根火柴，火光把四周照亮了。在亮光里，親愛(ài)的和生前一樣的`祖母出現(xiàn)了。她依然是那么的慈愛(ài)和溫和，然而那快活和幸福的樣子卻是她生前從未有過(guò)的

BUYING A HAT
A lady went to a hat shop to buy a hat. As she was very fussy, it took her a long time to pick on one. Already at the end of his patience the salesman was afraid that she might change her mind again so he tried to flatter her: "An excellent choice, madam. You look at least ten years younger with this hat on!" To his dismay, the lady took off her hat at once and said: "I don't want a hat that makes me look ten years older as soon as I take it off. Show me some more hats!"
買帽子
一位婦女到一家帽子店買帽子。她很挑剔，用了很長(zhǎng)時(shí)間才選好了一頂。已經(jīng)忍耐到極限的售貨員害怕她再改變主意，便恭維她："你做了極好的選擇，夫人。你戴上這頂帽子看上去起碼年輕十歲!"但令他沮喪的是，這位女士馬上摘下了她的帽子說(shuō)："我不想要一頂摘下來(lái)便使我立刻顯得老十歲的帽子。多拿一些帽子給我看看!
